Consider the conditions in which marine engines operate - hot, damp, cramped with salty bilges, intermittent use and irregular maintenance. What they really need - cool and dry air - is rarely what they get.
Repairs will keep you going, but eventually weak links appear in the chain. When it comes to rebuilding, parts can be expensive and hard to find, plus you need a skilled mechanic to do the job.
Rarely are the older, raw-water cooled engines suitable for rebuilding as the internal water passages in the block and head are corroded beyond salvation.
Ultimately, a rebuild can cost money that’s better invested on new technology. As a rule of thumb, don’t spend more than 40 per cent of the full cost of a replacement.
You can sell or trade your old engine if it hasn’t totally given up the ghost, but it needs to also be kept in mind that the outlay on a new installation will rarely be offset by a rise in resale value. You do it because you want to enjoy trouble-free use of your boat and to limit future expense.

DIESEL AND PETROL
An inboard motor is a marine propulsion system for boats. As opposed to an outboard motor where an engine is mounted outside of the hull of the craft, an inboard motor is an engine enclosed within the hull of the boat, usually connected to a propulsion screw by a driveshaft.
SAILDRIVE UNITS
Saildrive engines consist of a simple horizontal output shaft extended rearward from the engine, through the stern via a stuffing box. The saildrive has several advantages over the traditional sailboat transmission: smaller horizontal size, no stuffing box to maintain, and the propeller is mounted horizontally instead of at a downward angle.
OUTBOARD MOTORS
An outboard motor is a propulsion system for boats, consisting of a self-contained unit that includes engine, gearbox and propeller or jet drive, designed to be affixed to the outside of the transom.
STERNDRIVES
A sterndrive or inboard/outboard drive (I/O) is a form of marine propulsion which combines inboard power with outboard drive. The engine sits just forward of the transom while the drive unit lies outside the hull.
The drive unit carries power from the inboard engine, typically mounted above the waterline, outboard through the transom and downward to the propeller below the waterline.

RAW AND FRESH WATER SYSTEMS
Marine engines, as well as automotive engines are, cooled by circulating water thru the engine block. Marine engines are unique in that there are two different types of cooling systems. W stock a large range of standard raw water system, and the fresh water cooling system parts and hoses.
BILGE AND HYDRAULIC
Electric bilge pumps are often fitted with float switches which turn on the pump when the bilge fills to a set level. Since bilge pumps can fail, use of a backup pump is often advised. The primary pump is normally located at the lowest point of the bilge, while the secondary pump would be located higher.
